The power of mango: How mango butter can help your skin

Mango butter benefits for the skin

Mango butter - ever heard of it? We all love a ripe, delicious, juicy mango but many of us have never heard of the skincare powerhouse that comes from the mango seed. It’s one of our favorite skincare ingredients and can work wonders for your skin – but how exactly does it help your skin feel healthier, happier and more hydrated?

It’s a skincare powerhouse

What is mango butter? Mango butter is a natural ingredient that’s extracted from the kernels of the mango fruit. It’s a creamy, off-white butter that’s full of essential fatty acids as well as vitamins and minerals. Mango butter is produced through a process called cold-pressing – which separates the oil at low temperatures without damaging the nutrients. Its lightweight texture means it’s easily absorbed in the skin. Nourishing, moisturizing and deeply healing – it’s one of our favorite ingredients and one of the stars of our solid shave bar!

One question that we get asked frequently is ‘will mango butter clog my pores?’ and the answer is, maybe. Mango butter has a fairly low comedogenic rating of 2 — however if you have issues with acne, we suggest steering away from using it on your face. In our formulations, we prefer to use it in body care applications versus facial care applications for this reason.

It’s full of nourishing vitamins and minerals

One of the best things about mango butter is its ability to deeply moisturize and nourish your skin. It’s loaded with essential fatty acids, like oleic and stearic, that can penetrate deeply into your skin and lock in moisture, leaving your skin feeling soft and supple.

It’s also a rich source of essential vitamins, including vitamin A and vitamin E.Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant that helps to promote healthy skin cell growth, contributing to smoother and more radiant-looking skin. It also aids in wound healing and supports the skin's immune function, protecting it from environmental aggressors such as UV radiation and pollution.

Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals, and reducing the damaging effects of the sun. Both vitamins A and E work together synergistically to enhance their effectiveness, making mango butter an excellent ingredient for nourishing the skin and helping to strengthen your skin barrier.

It’s an anti-inflammatory miracle worker

Mango butter isn’t just a moisturizer, though. It’s a miracle worker. Mango butter uses are many and If you have skin irritation, mango butter might be able to help. Mango butter contains anti-inflammatory compounds that can help to soothe irritation and reduce redness in your skin. This makes it a great ingredient for people with sensitive or reactive skin. Rich in vitamin C, it also helps to repair damage from the sun and promotes collagen production in the skin – helping to give your skin more elasticity and a more even skin tone.

But that's not all. Mango butter has healing properties too! It can help to treat minor skin irritations like rashes, burns and insect bites. It can also reduce the appearance of scars and even out your skin tone - who wouldn't want that? It’s one of the reasons we choose to use it in our solid shave bar – to help heal the nicks, cuts and irritation that can sometimes come with shaving.

It’s a good choice for the planet.

Mango butter is also a great environmentally friendly choice. It’s upcycled – which means it's made from the kernel of the mango fruit – a part of the fruit that would otherwise be discarded as waste. By repurposing this waste material, mango butter helps reduce waste. Plus, buying products that incorporate upcycled ingredients promotes fair trade and sustainable farming practices, while also supporting the communities where the ingredients are sourced.

It’s just one of many reasons why we think mango butter is such a powerhouse ingredient for your skin and the planet!

Mango butter vs. Shea butter: Which is the best choice for my skin?

Another common question we get asked is ‘which is better for my skin — mango butter or shea butter?’ The answer is both! Both offer tremendous benefits for the skin — and it’s more about the texture you’re looking for with shea butter being much thicker and richer than mango butter.

Mango butter's lightweight texture, ability to protect the skin from environmental stresses and the fact that it’s rich in healing vitamins like A and E make it a great choice for lighter body care applications, like our solid shave bar.

Shea butter, on the other hand, is an even thicker and creamier butter that creates an occlusive layer on the skin — essentially sealing in moisture. Shea butter also contains anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe irritated skin, making it an excellent choice as an ingredient for our deeply moisturizing solid lotion bar.

One of the most significant differences between mango butter and Shea butter is their texture, with mango butter being lighter and Shea butter being much thicker. To tap into the power of both butters we suggest shaving with our solid shave bar and then following up with our shea butter packed lotion bar to seal the moisture in. Experience both mango and shea in our Silky Skin Ritual set which includes both our starter shave set and a solid lotion bar!
